So, I'm planning to host a game of Pathfinder (basically an improved D&D 3.5) over Fantasy Grounds 2, hopefully in the near future. I have 2 players in for it right now, and I'm looking for up to 2 more guys that would want to join in. A third, I think, would be pushing it.

As long as you're not some super serious powergamer or anything, feel free to post in this thread if you're interested at all or want any more info, even if you're completely new to the whole D&D thing.

Anyhow, here's a rough description of the setting I've got planned out:

The premise here is that the players are all joining this particular adventurer's guild. It used to be a pretty damn good guild, and was once up there with the top guilds back in the day (a few years before the players arrive), but most of their top members ended up leaving the guild, joining another guild, dying, or a combination of those. So since then the guild has been looking for new members that could help it rise up again. It sort of helps that most of the other guilds either completely suck or are all hoity-toity and demand previous guild experience and 18s in every stat.
Now, since the players arrive and sign up at roughly the same time, they get put into their own team for job-doing purposes. The guild will feature a bulletin board that always keeps several job postings on it that he players pick out and complete for differing rewards. Expect action, adventure, romance, an actual plot arising out of certain jobs put up, and interferences by rival guilds.

I plan to make sure that the jobs are interesting enough, and to spice things up with a twist or some such every once in a while. But yeah, I believe that's most of it right now. Thanks for reading, and possibly replying.

This sounds interesting to me. I'd love to join in and see where things go. I could use an incarnation of Prinn for this, what with her being a warrior and all.

Sounds good. If you've got an MSN or if you still use your AIM account at all, I can use that for contacting you for when I plan on hosting, or for links to Pathfinder and FG2 stuff if you need those.

Let us cast our minds back to the early days of Fantasy Role Playing, back when ye Dread Gygax was loose upon the land. Funny how humor and horror can start out so alike. Let us go still earlier (yes, it is permitted to breathe sighs of relief) to the days before Gygax (and the courts) thought that he owned FRP. In the early seventies, Ed Whitchurch ran "his game," and one of the participants was Eric Sorenson, a veritable giant of a man. This story is essentially true: I know both Ed and Eric, and neither denies it (although Eric, for reasons that will become apparent, never repeats it either). If my telling of it does not match the actual events precisely, it is because I've heard it many different ways depending on how much of what type of intoxicants Ed had taken recently.

>> No.50   [Delete]   [Edit]

The gist of it is that Eric, well, you need a bit more about Eric, or else I won't fill quota. Eric comes quite close to being a computer. When he games, he methodically considers each possibility before choosing his preferred option. If given time, he will invariably pick the optimum solution. It has been known to take weeks. He is otherwise in all respects a superior gamer, and I've spent many happy hours competing with and against him, as long as he is given enough time.

So, Eric was playing a Neutral Paladin (why should only Lawful Good religions get to have holy warriors was the thinking) in Ed's game. He even had a holy sword, which fought well, and did all those things holy swords are supposed to do, including detect good (random die roll; it could have detected evil). He was on some lord's lands when the following exchange occurred:

>> No.51   [Delete]   [Edit]

ED: You see a well groomed garden. In the middle, on a small hill, you see a gazebo.

ERIC: A gazebo? What color is it?

ED: (Pause) It's white, Eric.

ERIC: How far away is it?

ED: About fifty yards.

ERIC: How big is it?

ED: (Pause) It's about thirty feet across, fifteen feet high, with a pointed top.

ERIC: I use my sword to detect good on it.

ED: It's not good, Eric. It's a gazebo!

ERIC: (Pause) I call out to it.

ED: It won't answer. It's a gazebo!

>> No.52   [Delete]   [Edit]

ERIC: (Pause) I sheathe my sword and draw my bow and arrows. Does it respond in any way?

ED: No, Eric, it's a gazebo!

ERIC: I shoot it with my bow (roll to hit). What happened?

ED: There is now a gazebo with an arrow sticking out of it.

ERIC: (Pause) Wasn't it wounded?

ED: Of course not, Eric! It's a gazebo!

ERIC: (Whimper) But that was a plus three arrow!

ED: It's a gazebo, Eric, a gazebo! If you really want to try to destroy it, you could try to chop it with an axe, I suppose, or you could try to burn it, but I don't know why anybody would even try. It's a *)@#! gazebo!

ERIC: (Long pause. He has no axe or fire spells.) I run away.

ED: (Thoroughly frustrated) It's too late. You've woken up the gazebo, and it catches you and eats you.

ERIC: (Reaching for his dice) Maybe I'll roll up a fire-using mage so I can avenge my Paladin.

At this point, the increasingly amused fellow party members restored a modicum of order by explaining what a gazebo is. It is solely an afterthought, of course, but Eric is doubly lucky that the gazebo was not situated on a grassy gnoll...

Alright this is a little project we've been working for awhile in secret. The links that follow detail a play by post style RPG that follows a rather bizarre premise. Make of it what you will.

Hey people, I found a way to play Magic the Gathering online.....for free, so it's totally not Magic Online.

It's called OCTGN, and it's freeware. It's an online MtG thingie with rule enforcement and up 4 players can play a match. So now you can have that Two Headed Giant Match you always wanted to do, for free.

Get it here(Comes with every card up to Zendikar):
http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/5311348/OCTGN_w__Magic_the_Gathering_2.8

Step 1: Install OCTGN
Step 2: Start it.
Step 3: Go to "Manage Existing Cards"
Step 4: Click "Install new cards"
Step 5: Go to the folder where you downloaded the game, click on the map "1. blablabla" and then "Core sets". There should be a file there, double click on it and it will install. Now do the rest and move on to the 2nd folder and so on.

How to make a deck and how to join a game are pretty obvious.

We should totally make a list of people playing. That way we can just poke eachother on Xat for a game. I'll make a list and sticky it later...So everyone playing just post in this thread.

Go go, Magic the Gathering thread!

So, what's everyones colors and how long have you been playing? I just got started and a friend of mine made me a black/red deck.

Speaking of which, what's the best way to aquiring new cards? Buying boosters or a card at a time?

>> No.6   [Delete]   [Edit]

I played for 3 years, now I don't really play anymore for various reasons. Having gone the booster route before, let me say this... unless you're really lucky, you're going to end up with piles and piles of cards that you don't want and will probably never use in a deck. People sometimes buy them hoping to stumble upon one of those $50 rares or something, but that's about it.

If you want to actually make decks out of the cards you buy, you're better off figuring out what kind of deck you want to make and just buying or trading for the individual cards you'll need to make it work. Decks that you just threw a bunch of random cards of a certain color in... well... it never really worked for me, that's all I can say.

Thanks for the advice, I'll start buying individual cards and buy a booster from time to time.
